Walks and events
  • Everyone is welcome to attend the walk, but you must have appropriate footwear and clothing.
  • For day long walks, bring enough food and drink for 5-6 hours.
  • The normal Barnard Castle meeting place for car sharing is the Health Centre, Richardson Fields, off Victoria Road.
  • Most of our walks start at 10:00, but there is more variation in Winter - unusual start times are highlighted.

    Saturday 13th March - LIGHTING THE WALL
    (Updates regarding this trip will be sent by email and via the website)
    Meet outside Charles Dickens Lodge to pick up the coach at 10:30 am. The coach will drop us off at Gilsland (around 12:30) for a 6-mile walk via Crammel and Lynn waterfall. To be followed by a meal at the Twice Brewed Inn from where we hope to see the wall lit up on the ridge above us. Return via Chollerford with views of the wall. Please note that details of the event are still very sketchy and it is expected that some roads will be closed, so we can't be specific at this stage.
    Cost of coach £10:00 - £12:00 (depending on numbers and size of coach)

    Saturday 10th April - Newbiggin on Lune
    Leave the Health Centre at 9:15 am. Cars to the West end of Newbiggin on Lune (GR704053) to meet the leaders at 10:00 am. Intake, Crosby Garrett Fell, The Potts Valley. 7.5 - 8 moderate miles. Can be lengthened to 9.5 miles via Beacon Hill and Crosby Garret. (Another leader would be required).     Saturday 22nd May - Over Silton
    Leave the Health Centre at 8:45 am. Cars to Over Silton (GR 451933) to meet the leaders at 10:15 am. Walk via Nether Silton, Nab Farm, Cleveland Way, Square Corner, Oakdale Cottage, Sandpit Lane. 10.5 miles - moderate with one steep climb and some stiles. Can be shortened to 7.5 miles.     Sunday 30th May - Skelton

    Saturday 12th June- RAMBLERS' 75th ANNIVERSARY BATON WALK
    Two walks from Bowlees for the Ramblers 75th Anniversary celebrations, followed by a meal at Newbiggin Village Hall:
    "A" Party Walk
    Leave the Health Centre at 9:15 am. Cars to Bowlees Picnic Site (GR906 283) to meet the leaders at 10:00 am. Coldberry Gutter, Middleton and then along Tees back to Newbiggin. 10 miles approx. Leaders: Tom and Lis (01833 650192)
    "B" Party Walk
    Leave the Health Centre at 10:15 am. Cars to Bowlees Picnic Site (GR906 283) to meet the leaders at 11:00 am. Ash Hill, Ettersgill, Hanging Shaws, High Crag, Bracken Rigg. 8 moderate miles. Leaders: Joan and Ian (01833 637825) Mobile on the day (07745 451198)
    Both groups will then meet at Newbiggin Village Hall for a meal at 5:00 pm supplied by Newbiggin W.I.
    Choice of meal: Ham or vegetarian quiche with salad, plus trifle or fruit pie, plus tea and home made biscuits. Cost £7 each.

    Saturday 19th June- East Allen Dale
    Leave the Health Centre at 8:15 am. Cars to Allendale Town village centre (GR 838 559) to meet the leader at 10:00 am. An 8/9 mile circular walk including the flower rich hay meadows in East Allen Dale, with the chance to visit the North Pennines AONB Hay Time Project Exhibition in Allendale Village Hall and have a cup of tea in Allendale Town.     Saturday 26th June- Westgate in Weardale
    Leave the Health Centre at 9:15am. Cars to meet leader at 10:00am at Westgate in Weardale - car park on minor road to Brotherlee at Haswicks (GR380 910). Slitt, Rookhope, Eastgate, Brotherlee. 11 moderate miles with some rough moorland. Can be shortened.     Saturday 3rd July - SUMMER BBQ - Cotherstone
    Meet at 1:30 pm at Cotherstone Village Hall for an 8 mile circular walk, followed by a BBQ at John and Linda Bird's house (RA Members only). Cost £5.00 per person.
