Walks and events
  • Everyone is welcome to attend the walk, but you must have appropriate footwear and clothing.
  • For day long walks, bring enough food and drink for 5-6 hours.
  • The normal Barnard Castle meeting place for car sharing is the Health Centre, Richardson Fields, off Victoria Road.
  • Most of our walks start at 10:00, but there is more variation in Winter - unusual start times are highlighted.

    Saturday 31st July - Hamsterley Forrest
    Leave the Health Centre at 9am. Cars to the car park near the Visitor Centre at Hamsterley Forrest, GR092312, to meet the leaders at 9:45am. (Car Park fee £3). Bedburn Beck, Metcalf House, Hoppyland, "The Castles" (As seen on Time Team by Tony Robinson), (By kind permission of the owner) High Shipley and Carwood Hall. 9 moderate miles with 2 climbs.     Wednesday 4th August - SLIDE SHOW
    Slide Show by Joan and Ian Martin. "Our adventure in Nepal" 7.30pm in the Trinity Methodist Church Hall. Admission including coffee/tea £2.50. Everyone welcome

    Saturday 7th August - Buckden Pike
    Leave the Health Centre at 8.30am to meet leader in Buckden car park at 10am. (Parking charges apply). Walk to Buckden Pike and return via Starbotton and Dalesway - c.8.5 miles. Moderate overall but 2.5 miles uphill to Buckden Pike is hard. Hope to finish off in the West Winds café. ( http://www.westwindsinyorkshire.co.uk/ ) If the weather is bad or there is poor visibility an alternate walk will be offered - probably via Cray, Yockenthwaite and Hubberholm.     Saturday 21st August - Saltburn-by-the Sea
    Leave the Health Centre at 9.am. Cars to Saltburn-by-the Sea to park near the Cliff Lift at 10.30am to meet the leader. Skelton Gill, Skelton Green, Cleveland Street, Warsett Hill.10 moderate miles. Back to leaders for tea and cakes. LEADER: Joan (01642 321205)

    Saturday 28th August - Bowes
    Leave the Health Centre at 9.20am. Cars to the West end of Bowes (do not go past the bus turning circle) to meet the leaders at 9.45am. Gilmonby, Pinlow Hill, Citron Seat, Sleightholme, Mellwaters. 9 moderate miles with some rough moorland. Can be shortened to 7 miles or extended slightly to Gods Bridge.     Saturday 11th September - COACH TRIP TO DO THE LIMESTONE LINK -2 Linear Walks
    Meet at 8.30am outside Charles Dickens Lodge, Galgate, Barnard Castle. *** If there is no response to the trip by 31st July 2010, the trip may be cancelled ***

    "A" walk - Limestone Link. Kirkby Lonsdale, Hutton Roof Crags, Holme, Fairy Steps, Hazelslack, Arnside. 13 moderate miles. Leaders Tom and Lis. (01833 650192), Mobile on the day (07769 723509)

    Alternatively: Stay on the coach and " do your own walk" from Arnside, such as climbing Arnside Knott.

    Cost of coach: approx. £11 - Book with Lis Vlaming or Joan Martin before September 4th, with choice of meal. £5 non -refundable deposit required.

    Saturday 2nd October - Great Ayton
    Leave the Health Centre at 8:45am to meet leaders at Great Ayton T.I.C. car park at 10.15am. Ayton Firs, Easby Firs, Great Broughton, Stokesley and back to Great Ayton. 11 miles. Good grassy paths, quite a few stiles, only one small climb. Can be shortened to approximately 9 miles by getting the bus from Stokesley back to Great Ayton.     Leave the Health centre at 8.30am Cars to at Grosmont car park to catch 10.30am NYMR train to Newtondale Halt. Train Fare needed! Walk via Needle Point, Wardle Rigg, Roman Road and Mallyan Spout. 11 moderate miles with moorland and field paths. Leader: Mike (01642 321205)
